Your acceptance letter has arrived. Secrets of Strixhaven officially releases on April 24, 2026 — and if you haven't been paying attention to spoiler season, now is the time to catch up. This is one of the most anticipated Magic: The Gathering sets in recent memory, and we're breaking down everything you need to know: the lore, the mechanics, the chases, and what product formats make the most sense for you.
Welcome Back to Strixhaven
Strixhaven is one of the most beloved planes in all of Magic — a university of magical learning founded by five Elder Dragons, each presiding over their own college. Lorehold (white/red) studies history and spirits. Prismari (blue/red) channels art through elemental magic. Quandrix (blue/green) bends the math of nature. Silverquill (white/black) wields the power of words. And Witherbloom (black/green) taps into the life and death cycle of the natural world.
The last time we visited this plane was during the Phyrexian invasion in March of the Machine, where the students of Strixhaven worked together to defend their world. Now we're back for a deeper look — and it seems the university is hiding some darker secrets beneath its prestigious exterior. The story follows familiar faces like Zimone, Quintorius, and Rootha as they navigate campus intrigue, ancient discoveries, and things lurking in the back stacks of the library.
New Mechanic: Prepared
The headline new mechanic for Secrets of Strixhaven is Prepared — and it's one of the most flavorful designs we've seen tied to a school setting. Creatures with Prepared can cast a specific attached spell at a designated cost and speed, but they need to become prepared again before they can use it a second time. Think of it like a student studying before an exam: they can ace it once, but they need to hit the books again before the next test.
A great example from the spoilers is Encouraging Aviator, a blue creature that comes prepared with the classic Alpha spell Jump — giving a creature flying until end of turn. It's a potent mid-game threat that can swing combat in your favor and conveniently dodges sorcery-speed removal. The Prepared mechanic rewards patience and planning, which fits perfectly with the academic theme of the set.
Mystical Archive Returns
One of the most exciting confirmed features of Secrets of Strixhaven is the return of the Mystical Archive — the fan-favorite slot from the original Strixhaven set that reprints powerful spells with stunning alternate art. There's a Mystical Archive card in every booster, making each pack feel special right out of the gate. Collector Boosters take it further with three guaranteed Mystical Archive cards per pack, including the possibility of Japanese-language Silver Scroll foil treatments that are some of the most beautiful cards the game has ever produced.
The Headliner Chase: Serialized Emeritus of Ideation
Every set needs a crown jewel, and Secrets of Strixhaven delivers in a big way. The headliner serialized card is Emeritus of Ideation, illustrated by legendary Power Nine artist Mark Poole — the same artist behind Ancestral Recall. Only 500 serialized copies exist across all languages, and they are exclusive to Collector Boosters. Non-serialized versions of the card are mechanically identical and can be found in standard boosters, but there's only one version with a number stamped on it. If you're a collector, this is your pull of the year.
Commander Decks: Choose Your College
Secrets of Strixhaven ships with five 100-card Commander precons, one for each college. Whether you're leading a Lorehold Spirit tribal army with Quintorius, running infinite X-spells with Zimone in Quandrix, or slinging words as deadly weapons with Silverquill, there's a deck for every playstyle. These are great for newer Commander players looking to jump in, and experienced players can use them as solid upgrade bases.
The Commander set (SOC) contains 426 cards in total, with plenty of new legends that are already generating buzz on EDHREC. Lorehold, the Historian is sitting at over 2,400 decks before the set has even officially released — that's a sign of real demand.
Which Product Is Right for You?
Play Boosters are your everyday opening experience — 30 per box, with 1–5 rares or higher per pack and at least one traditional foil guaranteed. Great for drafting, cracking for fun, or building toward a Standard or Commander deck. The Play Booster Box is the most flexible option and a solid value.
Collector Boosters are for the collector at heart — 12 per box, with 15 cards per pack loaded with foils, alternate art treatments, Collector Booster-exclusive styles, three Mystical Archive cards, and a shot at the serialized Emeritus of Ideation. If you're chasing the premium version of any card in this set, Collector Boosters are where to look.
The Bundle includes 9 Play Boosters plus promo cards and a foil land pack — a great gift or personal pickup. The Codex Bundle takes it further with 2 Collector Boosters and 6 Play Boosters, making it one of the best value packages in the lineup. And the Draft Night kit (Pick-Two format, 12 Play Boosters + 1 Collector Booster) is a fantastic group activity.
Prerelease Weekend: April 17–20
If you want to play Secrets of Strixhaven before anyone else, Prerelease weekend runs April 17–20 at local game stores. Each Prerelease Kit includes everything you need to play, a promo card, and a spindown die. It's a great low-pressure way to experience the new mechanics and see the cards in person before the full release.
